An Alabama high school cheerleader will have her Honor Walk today as she undergoes surgery to donate her organs.

Kimber Mills, 18, was shot in the head early Sunday during a party in a wooded area known as The Pit in eastern Jefferson County.

Three other people were injured, and a 27-year-old suspect has been charged with attempted murder. That charge is expected to be upgraded to murder.

On the early morning of Sunday, October 19, 2025, a bonfire party was held in a wooded area in Pinson, Jefferson County, Alabama, near Highway 75 North. Among those attending was Kimber Mills, an 18-year-old senior at Cleveland High School. She was a cheerleader, track athlete, and aspiring nurse known for her bright and positive personality.

During the gathering, a 27-year-old man named Steven Tyler Whitehead arrived at the party. Witnesses say he began harassing people, including Kimber, and an altercation broke out. In the midst of the confrontation, Whitehead allegedly pulled out a gun and began shooting into the crowd.

Four people were shot — Kimber Mills, an 18-year-old male, a 21-year-old male, and a 20-year-old female. One of the victims, 21-year-old Silas McCay, said he tried to protect Kimber and was shot ten times in the process. Kimber was hit in the head and reportedly also in the leg. She was rushed to a hospital in Birmingham in critical condition.

Doctors determined that Kimber’s brain injury was catastrophic, leaving no hope for meaningful recovery. Her family shared that medical staff told them surgery would not restore her to any functional life. Kimber was placed on life support, and her loved ones gathered to say goodbye.

Her family announced that Kimber would donate her organs, fulfilling her wish to help others even in death. An “Honor Walk” was planned at the hospital before her organs were to be donated, allowing staff and loved ones to pay their respects.

At her high school, classmates, teachers, and community members held prayer gatherings and tributes in her honor. Friends described her as “bubbly, kind, and full of life.” A fundraiser was organized to support her family and the other victims.

The suspect, Steven Tyler Whitehead, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of attempted murder. His bond was set at $180,000. Authorities indicated that if Kimber is declared deceased, his charges will likely be upgraded to murder.

The shooting remains under investigation, with police seeking to understand the motive behind Whitehead’s actions and his connection, if any, to the victims.

The tragedy has deeply shaken the small Alabama community. Kimber Mills is remembered as a young woman with a radiant spirit, whose final act of organ donation will bring life to others.
