Young Dad Passed Away Unexpectedly, Doctors Discover 72 Lung Holes

Dylan Jay Watts, a 28-year-old father from Broulee, a small coastal town on Australia’s New South Wales coast, was known by many as a devoted and loving parent.

His friends and family admired him for his deep affection toward his young son, and Dylan often expressed how becoming a father gave him renewed purpose and joy.

Upon the birth of his child, Dylan shared a heartfelt message, saying, “Words cannot describe how much more purpose I feel with you in my life!” Sadly, Dylan’s promising future was cut tragically short when he passed away on March 22, leaving behind a grieving family and community.

Although Dylan had been battling serious health issues for some time, his sudden death shocked everyone who knew him. Family friend Cheyenne O’Brien reflected on the situation, noting that despite Dylan’s prolonged illness, his passing came unexpectedly.

“Although the 28-year-old had been gravely ill in the weeks and days leading to his passing, his loved ones were shocked by his death,” she said. This sentiment was echoed by many who knew Dylan, who had hoped for his recovery despite the severity of his condition.

Dylan’s health problems first began to intensify in 2021, when a medical scan revealed that he had two holes in his lungs. At the time, this diagnosis was alarming but not immediately fatal. However, over the next few years, his condition worsened dramatically. By mid-2024, the number of holes in his lungs had increased to an astonishing 72, indicating a severe and persistent bacterial infection that ravaged his respiratory system. This rapid deterioration baffled his family and  doctors alike.

His sister, Caitlyn Watts, shared details of Dylan’s struggles with Daily Mail Australia, revealing how the situation had escalated. “I found out in July of last year how severe things had begun to get,” she said. “He had holes in his lungs and had been hospitalized for three weeks after coughing up blood.” Caitlyn also revealed the seriousness of the infection, mentioning that Dylan’s doctor warned him that if he hadn’t sought medical help so quickly, the outcome could have been fatal. Despite the aggressive treatment, Dylan’s health continued to decline.

Throughout his ordeal, Dylan suffered from relentless and debilitating symptoms. He experienced chronic coughing fits, severe acid reflux, extreme fatigue, and significant mental health challenges as he battled the disease. Over-the-counter medications provided little relief, and his condition necessitated specialized medical care. In early 2024, after suffering a lung hemorrhage, Dylan was admitted to the hospital for three weeks. Caitlyn described the intensity of his treatment, saying, “By this point, my brother was on so many medications and antibiotics that they filled an entire backpack.”

Despite the severity of his illness, Dylan remained remarkably hopeful and determined to fight for his health. “He was severely unwell yet fighting for his health and optimistic about some kind of recovery,” Caitlyn said. Unfortunately, doctors had warned that the advanced bacterial infection and the damage it caused to his lungs made it unlikely he would live beyond the age of 30. The prognosis was grim, but Dylan and his family held onto hope.

In the final days before his passing, Dylan’s mother, Suzanne, brought him home along with his beloved puppy, Polar, so he could be surrounded by family and comfort. She also arranged for long-term care to support him. Tragically, despite these efforts, Dylan died just five days after returning home. His death came only days before his 29th birthday, a devastating loss that left his family and friends struggling to comprehend how quickly his health had declined.

In the wake of this tragedy, Dylan’s family launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses. The campaign set a goal of AU$6,000 and has already raised over AU$4,600, demonstrating the outpouring of support from the community. Caitlyn shared a heartfelt message on the fundraiser page, urging others to cherish their loved ones. “Let this be a reminder that those you love can be gone in an instant. So, hold them close today and tell them you love them. There is a fragility in all of us,” she wrote. She also promised that Dylan’s memory and story would live on in the hearts of those who loved him. “He will be forever missed,” she added.

Cheyenne O’Brien also expressed the deep sadness felt by those close to Dylan and highlighted the emotional toll of both the loss and the practicalities of organizing his farewell. “Although Dylan had been unwell, this has, of course, come as a shock to his loved ones who are now having to deal with not only their grief, but the stress of having to organize his farewell,” she said. She appealed to the public for support, encouraging donations and sharing of the fundraiser to help Dylan’s family celebrate his life and provide him with the send-off he deserves. “Please donate if you can and share. Thank you from Dylan’s family,” O’Brien urged.

Dylan’s story is a poignant reminder of how fragile life can be, especially when faced with serious illness. It highlights the importance of support, compassion, and community during times of hardship. His legacy as a loving father and devoted family member continues to inspire those who knew him. Although Dylan’s time was cut tragically short, the love he shared and the impact he made will not be forgotten.
