Rare Glimpses of Robert Redford as a Loving Grandfather Will Melt Your Heart

After the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Robert Redford, his grandchildren shared an emotional tribute through never-before-seen family photos, offering a rare and intimate look into the private life of the Hollywood icon. Redford died at 89 years old on September 16, 2025, surrounded by loved ones in the place he cherished most, according to family spokesperson Cindi Berger.

Redford’s grandson Conor Schlosser, son of Shauna Redford, posted a series of heartfelt images on Instagram. One photo showed him hugging his grandfather under the sun, another captured them sharing dinner, and a childhood picture displayed young Conor learning golf from Robert. “He was larger than life to the world, but to his family, he was simply that—family,” Conor wrote.

His granddaughter Lena Redford, daughter of Redford’s late son James, also honored him with a red heart emoji and a carousel of touching photos. One picture showed her as a child riding horses with her grandfather. Another powerful image captured Lena resting her head on Robert’s shoulder while holding a framed childhood photo of herself—connecting generations through a quiet moment of love. Other photos showed the close bond between Lena, her father James, and her grandfather.

Dylan Redford, Lena’s brother, also paid tribute. In a now-expired Instagram Story, he shared a photo with Robert, writing: “He was the best grampa a grandson could ask for. He also made amazing things, helped others make amazing things, and tried to make the world a better place.”

Though known globally for his work in film, Robert Redford was lovingly called “Bo-Pa” or “Ba-Poo” by his grandchildren—a playful nickname that showed his softer side. He once admitted he didn’t like the word “grandfather” because it made him feel old and distant. Instead, he preferred being a warm and involved part of his grandchildren’s lives.

In 2016, Robert was interviewed by Dylan in a rare, emotional conversation. The two discussed fame, family, and identity. Dylan shared how strange it felt when classmates reacted to Redford’s visit at school as if a celebrity had walked in—not just his grandpa. Redford, in turn, said he had always worked hard to protect his family from the pressures of fame, giving them space to grow.
