General Kurilla Retires After Leading CENTCOM Through Middle East Operations

After three decades in the U.S. military, General Michael “Erik” Kurilla, nicknamed “The Gorilla,” has retired as chief of U.S. Central Command. Kurilla oversaw President Trump’s June strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and led at least 15 major joint combat missions, including operations against Houthi forces in Yemen and Iran. He was praised for his decisive leadership and strategic foresight in the region, earning multiple awards, including two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.

Kurilla passes command to U.S. Navy Admiral Charles Bradford Cooper Jr., who will now oversee U.S. military operations across 21 nations in the Middle East and Central Asia. His departure comes amid recent Pentagon turmoil, including the firing of DIA chief Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse over a preliminary assessment of the Iran strikes. Kurilla expressed pride in his troops and confidence in Cooper’s leadership, highlighting the continuing focus on Iran and regional security.
