Gary Sinise Opens Up About His 40-Year Marriage to Moira

Gary Sinise: Actor, Philanthropist, Family Man

Gary Sinise isn’t like other actors. The Golden Globe-winning star has dedicated his life not only to acting but also to his family and serving others. Unlike many Hollywood marriages, Sinise and his wife Moira Harris have stayed together for 40 years, raising three children along the way. Now, Sinise shares the secret to their enduring love.

Early Life and Love for Theater

Born on March 17, 1955, in Blue Island, Illinois, Sinise grew up in Highland Park. A rebellious teen, he played in bands and struggled in school. In high school, he discovered theater, saying, “I was playing in bands, doing plays, and started a theater company after high school…then the theater just took over everything.”

At 21, he co-founded the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago with friends Terry Kinney and Jeff Perry. Beginning in a church basement, the company eventually gained influence in the city. In 1981, Sinise became artistic director and expanded their productions to New York, showcasing shows like Sam Shepard’s True West, starring Sinise and John Malkovich.

Breakthrough in Film

Though Sinise spent years behind the camera, he made his acting debut in A Midnight Clear (1992). His big breakthrough came in 1994 with Forrest Gump, playing Lt. Dan, a disabled and emotionally tortured veteran. His performance earned critical acclaim, a Golden Globe nomination, and an Academy Award nod.

Dedication to Veterans

Sinise’s portrayal of Lt. Dan reflected his personal commitment to veterans. Inspired by family members who served in World Wars and Korea, he created the Lt. Dan Band, performing for troops at home and abroad. Later, he founded the Gary Sinise Foundation, building over 80 homes for injured veterans and supporting military families in multiple ways.

A Lasting Marriage

Sinise met Moira Harris at Illinois State University. She was a talented actress, and he admired her quiet, kind personality. Their first wedding was postponed because they felt too young, but in 1981, they tied the knot. Together, they raised three children: Sophie (1988), McCanna Anthony (1990), and Ella (1992).

Sinise credits their long marriage to humor and mutual respect. “My wife’s a loving, funny, Irish-spirited person, and I’m still surprised at some of the things she says. She makes me laugh every day,” he told Parade.

Balancing Career and Service

Throughout his career, Sinise balanced acting with philanthropy. From films like Apollo 13The Green Mile, and CSI: NY to his tireless work with veterans, he has made a lasting impact both on and off-screen.

Legacy of Love and Service

Gary Sinise’s life exemplifies dedication—to family, art, and community. He proves that a thriving marriage, a fulfilling career, and meaningful service can coexist. Fans admire not just his acting but also his heart, especially for veterans and families in need.

Gary Sinise reminds us all: success is measured not only by fame but by the lives you touch along the way.
