Experts reveal why Donald Trump stood “no chance” of winning the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

Nobel Peace Prize Winner Announced
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has a new recipient, and it’s not Donald Trump.

Experts have explained why the U.S. president was unlikely to even be a contender.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee revealed the winner on October 10, the same day Israeli troops began withdrawing from parts of Gaza following the first phase of Trump’s ceasefire deal.

Trump’s Bold Claims
In recent months, Trump claimed he “ended six wars.” Just weeks into his second term, he said he “deserves” the Nobel Peace Prize but added: “They will never give it to me.”

Despite these statements, Trump was nominated by several prominent figures, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, experts emphasize that a nomination does not guarantee a win.

The Winner: Maria Corina Machado
This year, the prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader and pro-democracy campaigner Maria Corina Machado. Trump has not yet commented on Machado’s win. Experts, however, have shared why the U.S. president had little chance.

Expert Opinions
Asle Sveen, historian and Nobel Peace Prize author, told ABC News that Trump had “no chance to get the Peace Prize at all.” Alfred Nobel’s will specifies that the award should go to the person who has “done the most or best to advance fellowship among nations.”

Nina Graeger, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, said Trump simply did not fit that criteria. Darren Kew, dean of the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, noted that the committee reviewed actions from 2024—before Trump returned to office—but added that the committee “can decide on whoever it wishes.” Kew also mentioned Trump’s domestic and international record has “a lot of detractors.”

Democracy at the Forefront
When awarding Machado, the Nobel Committee highlighted the importance of democracy, a topic under scrutiny during Trump’s leadership. It stated:

“Democracy is a precondition for lasting peace. However, we live in a world where democracy is in retreat, where more and more authoritarian regimes are challenging norms and resorting to violence.”

The committee praised Machado for her unwavering support of a peaceful transition to democracy.

Late Nominations
Some of Trump’s nominations, including Netanyahu’s, were submitted after the January 31 deadline. This further reduced his chances of winning the prestigious award.
