Angelina Jolie makes bold claim about the US after Kimmel controversy

The decision to cancel Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show – which was set to return on Tuesday – was heavily criticized by many celebrities, including Mark Ruffalo and Pedro Pascal. Some have claimed that free speech is under attack in the US, and now Angelina Jolie shares her opinion.

When appearing at Spain’s San Sebastian film festival this weekend, the Academy Award-winning actress says she doesn’t recognize her country.

After Charlie Kirk’s death, the debate of free speech in the US became the talk of the town. Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel became the center of a huge controversy when he said on his talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, that the MAGA movement was trying to win political points by proving the suspect wasn’t one of their own.

“The MAGA Gang (is) desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.”

Kimmel’s words became highly controversial, and just hours later, two major station groups, Sinclair and Nexstar, announced they were preempting Jimmy Kimmel’s show on their local stations.

Later, ABC suspended the show completely, sparking a national debate about freedom of speech and potential government interference.

Angelina Jolie says she doesn’t “recognize” the US amid free speech debate

Many comedians and actors decided to show their support for Jimmy Kimmel. Stars such as Pedro Pascal and Olivia Rodrigo expressed their disappointment over the cancellation of Kimmel.

Moreover, Mark Ruffalo, who plays the Hulk in the Marvel Universe, which is owned by Disney, wrote that Disney stock will “go down a lot further” if they cancel Kimmel permanently.

Disney does not want to be the ones that broke America,” Ruffalo wrote, per CNN.

Another person who took a stand in the free speech debate is Angelina Jolie. As reported by The Guardian, the Academy Award-winning actress appeared at Spain’s San Sebastián film festival on Sunday.

Jolie was asked by a journalist, “What do you fear as an artist and an American?,” to which she responded, “I don’t recognize my country.” She didn’t mention Jimmy Kimmel specifically.

Jolie continued, “Anything anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think, is very dangerous. My worldview is equal, united and international. Anything anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think, is very dangerous.”

“We have to be careful not to say things casually”

She added, “These are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. These are very, very heavy times we are living in together.”

On Monday, Disney announced Jimmy Kimmel will return. According to CNN, the talk show host plans to address the controversy in his monologue on Tuesday.
