Nexstar Refuses To Air Kimmel’s Return To ABC Over Kirk Controversy

Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group, two of the largest owners of ABC affiliate stations, announced they will preempt “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” following comments made by the host about the recent death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Kimmel had inaccurately claimed on air that the suspect involved was a supporter of the MAGA movement.

Nexstar explained the decision as part of a commitment to maintaining respectful public discourse, especially amid heightened national tensions. Sinclair similarly confirmed it would replace Kimmel’s show with news programming across its ABC affiliates. This means that a significant portion of ABC stations will not air the show despite Disney reinstating Kimmel.

The controversy stems from Kimmel’s remarks linking Kirk’s death to political opponents. Law enforcement has stated that the alleged shooter, Tyler Robinson, holds left-leaning views and no known ties to conservative political groups. The network suspended the show indefinitely, citing the comments as “ill-timed and insensitive.”

An anonymous member of Kimmel’s staff expressed skepticism about the show’s return, claiming it’s unlikely that any public apology would satisfy critics. They suggested that Disney might opt to cancel the show entirely and replace it with reruns, given the rising pressure and potential controversies ahead.

Reports also indicate that FCC Chairman Brendan Carr is considering whether an investigation is warranted into the broadcast of the remarks. While Carr did not confirm an active inquiry, he acknowledged the agency has jurisdiction in some areas and is proceeding cautiously.

The future of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” remains uncertain amid growing media scrutiny, political backlash, and affiliate station resistance. While supporters view the situation as an overreaction, critics argue that Kimmel’s false statement undermined trust and inflamed divisions during a volatile moment in U.S. public discourse.
