Dozens Shot, Killed In Chicago Over Weekend As City Rejects Trump’s Help With Crime

Over Labor Day weekend, at least 54 people were shot in Chicago, seven fatally, according to police. Most shootings were unrelated, with few arrests reported.

President Trump has suggested sending in the National Guard and federal agents, but Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order barring Chicago police from cooperating with federal authorities, calling it a defense against federal overreach. Supported by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Johnson vowed to fight Trump’s plan in court and emphasized that local officers would not be “deputized” for federal patrols or immigration enforcement.

The White House criticized the move, accusing Democrats of politicizing crime reduction. Chicago continues to struggle with gun violence, recording hundreds of shootings and homicides this year.
