Graham Greene Dead at 73: Remembering the Life, Legacy, and Lasting Impact of the Oscar-Nominated ‘Dances with Wolves’ Actor

Graham Greene, the acclaimed Canadian actor who reshaped Indigenous representation in film and television, passed away on September 1, 2025, at age 73 after a long illness. Best known for his Oscar-nominated role as Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves, Greene went on to a career spanning more than 180 film, television, and stage credits, including Thunderheart, The Green Mile, Wind River, and Reservation Dogs.

Respected for his humility, humor, and professionalism, Greene believed in storytelling as a way to heal and unite communities. He received numerous honors throughout his career, including an Academy Award nomination, a Grammy, and the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.

Beyond the spotlight, he shared 35 years of marriage with Hilary Blackmore, raised their daughter Lilly, and cherished becoming a grandfather. Colleagues remembered him as generous and kind, an “Actor’s Actor.”
