Austin Target Tragedy Leaves Three Dead
On August 11, 2025, a routine shopping trip in north Austin turned into a devastating event outside a local Target. A disturbance escalated into violence, leaving three people dead—employee Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, 24, Adam Chow, 65, and his 4-year-old granddaughter, Astrid Fung. Chow’s wife survived with minor injuries.
Friends and neighbors remembered the victims as kind and devoted to family. A fundraiser for funeral costs has already raised nearly $50,000, while Target and local groups are providing counseling and support for employees and families.
Police arrested 32-year-old Ethan Nieneker shortly after the incident. Authorities say he began the disturbance in the parking lot, fled in a stolen vehicle, and caused multiple collisions before being apprehended. He now faces two counts of capital murder and one of felony murder.
The tragedy has left the Austin community in shock. Vigils, public condolences, and community fundraisers reflect both mourning and solidarity. City leaders emphasized the need for vigilance and cooperation to prevent similar events, while praising first responders for their swift action.
Though the legal process is just beginning, the memory of Hector, Adam, and Astrid continues to guide community reflection on safety, resilience, and compassion.
